Submit a Problem Report

How to submit a problem report?

When problems arise while using facility instruments, users need to submit a problem report using the dedicated google form, and if necessary also to inform other users of these problems, e.g. sending an email to nmr_group@lists.berkeley.edu. Below are the instructions for what to do when you encounter an error or a problem while accessing the NMR instruments.

When encountering issues or errors while using automated instruments (JEOL-400, NEO-500, NEO-501):

  1. Submitting a problem report using the google form is the only step needed for most instrument related problems. This includes the scenario when the queue is stopped due to an issue with locking, tuning, user sample submission, etc..
  2. The only time you have to contact nmr_group@lists.berkeley.edu is if the circumstances may endanger other users, e.g. there is a sample spill on the autosampler or near the instrument, or other safety related issues in the lab space. Please leave a paper note on the computer keyboard indicating to other users that the instrument is not usable. Office supplies can be found at the main entrance of the facility.
  3. NMR staff will address the reported problem as soon as possible, and users can continue adding samples to the autosampler and the queue while it is halted assuming the problem does not prevent them from doing so, e.g. a spill on the autosampler or a broken sample on the carousel, in which case a message should’ve been sent to the nmr_group as per (2).
  4. Once you submit a problem report, please check your inbox as the NMR staff may contact you with follow up questions.

For manually operated instruments (AVQ-400, AV-600, AV-700, NEO-400, AV-500):

  1. Submit a problem report using the google form.
  2. Select the “Something wrong” option under the  “Resource status report” on the FOM window for logging off from the instrument. Add a brief description to the comments section and this will make sure that the next user will be aware of the problem as it will be marked as such on your completed time slot.
  3. The only time you have to contact nmr_group@lists.berkeley.edu is if the problem prevents the next user from injecting/ejecting their sample to/from the spectrometer or if the circumstances may endanger other users, e.g. there is a sample spill on the or near the instrument, or other safety related issues in the lab space. Please leave a paper note on the computer keyboard indicating to other users that the instrument is not usable. Office supplies can be found at the main entrance of the facility.
  4. Once you submit a problem report, please check your inbox as the NMR staff may contact you with follow up questions.
